1. Get To Know Your Vehicle
For a lot of drivers, the car’s manual is the nice booklet that sits idly in the glove box, never to be opened. Do yourself a favor a give it a good read. Make sure that you have a strong understanding of the vehicle you’re going to be using for your road test. Drivers should know where everything is and how they work, in addition to basic maintenance procedures and service intervals.
More specifically driver should learn how to change the basic fluids in the car in case of a breakdown. How do you turn on your turn signal? How do you turn on or change your headlights. How do you adjust your mirrors? You certainly don’t want to be figuring these things out while driving.
2. Understanding Driving Basics
Part of mastering any skill is knowing the basics. You won’t be able to take your road test unless you’re comfortable with the most basic driving skills.
You should know what speed you should turn at. You should know how to react to an emergency vehicle when it approaches you. You should understand what to do when you come to a four-land stop. Once you understand these basics, you’ll be able to focus on other skills.
3. Parallel Parking
Parking is a huge part on the road test. If you fail the parking portion of your driving exam, you won’t be able to get your license.
If you want to pass the parking portion of your test, you’ll need to know how to back into a parking spot. You’ll also need to know how to parallel park. Parallel parking can be difficult for a lot of drivers, which is why you should get in as much practice as you can.
4. Highway Driving
A lot of drivers are comfortable on the road, but are less comfortable on the highway. You need to make sure you know how to safely drive on the expressway.
You should know how to merge into traffic while you are on the highway. You should be able to change lanes on the highway. You should be able to comfortably control your vehicle at high speeds.
5. Keep The Appropriate Following Distance
When you’re driving, you won’t want to get too close to the cars in front of you. You’ll want to make sure you’ll have enough room to stop if they do. Take the time to learn what an appropriate following distance is. Make sure there’s always enough space between you and the other cars on the road.
6. Keep Distractions To A Minimum
Driving safely requires all of your attention. If even a little bit of your attention is focused on your cell phone or another passenger, things can get dangerous very quickly. In fact according to a study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 3,179 people died in distraction-affected crashes, with an astounding 21% of teen drivers involved in fatal accidents being distracted by their cell phones.
