In a previous post, we told you how to jumpstart your car like a pro. Today, we are going to tackle another common problem that drivers can have on the road and that is when the car has run out of gas.
Running out of gas and getting stuck in the middle of nowhere is one of the most common fears a driver can have.
Luckily, it’s very easy to prevent too. You just have to check your gas every time you go for a long drive.
But sometimes, things just happen and when you find yourself in this situation, blaming yourself won’t do you any good. Instead, you should focus on the things that you can do to get you out of that situation.
Things To Do When You Run Out Gas
Safety should always be your number one priority. It’s dangerous to be on a car that isn’t moving in the middle of the road, so the first thing you should do is to make yourself visible.
First, turn your lights on and pull over the side of the road in the instant that you feel the car is already losing its power. You’ll easily notice this because the car will start to jerk or sputter before it stops. It is great if you can pull off the side of the road but in case you are already blocking traffic, calling 911 is the best thing to do.
If you think you are strong enough to push the car to the side of the road by yourself or if you have other passengers with you to help, that would also be great because you won’t be blocking the road. Just remember that the car has no power steering or power brakes.
If you have the slightest doubt that you can’t push the vehicle, then it is best to leave it alone. Pushing the car may not be a safe option because you might get caught by a fast car that’s rushing on the road.
Once you’re on the side of the road, stay inside the vehicle with your seatbelt on and think of what’s the next best thing to do. There are several options which include the following:
- Identify Your Location – The first thing you should do is to know where you are. Take a look at street signs or buildings to know your location. If you have your phone, you can also track your exact location through GPS.
- Call For Roadside Assistance – Many companies offer roadside assistance. Auto insurance may also include roadside assistance and all you have to do is to make a call. Some offer 24/7 service and are ready to help you wherever you are. You can instruct them to bring you some gas and they can also check the vehicle on-site to see if you have other problems aside from an empty gas tank.
- Ask Help From Friends and Family – You can also call up friends and family members who are closest to you to ask for help. Some may live nearby and have a can of gas around, especially those that own a lawnmower. You can also ask a favor from them to purchase gas for you.
- Call For A Towing Service – In case there is no roadside assistance that’s available in the area or at that time, you can call for a towing service instead. They can tow your car to the nearest gas station so you can fill up.
