Unless your front yard is going for some sort of vintage / rust vibe, that old beat-up car sitting in your yard is just a horrible sight.
Maybe it’s time you had it removed so you can free some space in your yard and get rid of that eyesore?
Where do you even begin to get rid of such a huge piece of trash?
It’s not tough, it just takes the right towing or wrecker service to make the process easy – and you might even make a nice wad of cash in the process. Here’s how…
Is The Car Really Junk?
The first thing that you should do is to determine if the car is really junk? Maybe it’s actually a gem that is just a little rough on the edges? Figure out if the car is still operable or not. Also try to determine the cost of repair. If the repair cost is greater than the value of the vehicle, it would be considered as totaled. Even if you have it repaired, there is no money to be made out of it.
If the car is outdated, there is rust all over the frame and the engine doesn’t run anymore, then it should definitely be headed to the junkyard. If you can still drive it but you just want to get rid of it, you could consider giving it to charity.
Find A Junkyard
Before you have the car towed to a junkyard make sure that they are going to accept it. Call up some of the local junkyards to compare prices and know their policies. Some may require the tires removed before accepting them. Others may pay more if it is already partially dismantled.
There are also some that pays you more if the car model is in demand. They’d be willing to pay more for the different parts that they need so it is best to know which parts are still functional. Additionally, most will also require documents before they accept the vehicle.
Do Necessary Paperwork
Do you still have the keys to that junk car? Usually, an inoperable vehicle wouldn’t require that. However, in most states, you must provide the registration of the vehicle. For those who have unregistered cars, a title transfer may be required. If you cannot find the title for the car, you can get a replacement or check the local registry.
In case you are not the owner of the vehicle, you should provide notarized permission before the car can be taken to the junkyard. For titles that still have a lien, a verification from the lienholder should be obtained first before the car is junked.
Find A Local Towing Company
Once you’ve found a junkyard to work with plus the necessary paperwork, you can now call up a local towing company to transport the vehicle. It would be better if you could find someone who already has experience in towing junk cars so that it could be quickly removed.
Some junk cars are already deteriorating and with all the rust, an experienced towing professional can better assess how to effectively tow the vehicle. They can identify the ideal spots of attachment or they may also advise you to have a flatbed tow truck if the cannot handle other means of towing.
Some municipalities may offer free towing of junk vehicles. Be sure to check if yours does. Just don’t forget to check their policy about free towing. Some may claim all the profit from the junk vehicle. If that is okay with you, then proceed. If not, then it would be best to find a towing company to work with on your own.
Once the car is towed to the junkyard, the license plate will be removed. The paperwork will also be brought to the motor vehicle registry to process.
