Preparing To Junk Your Car

There comes a time when you already need to junk your car. If you are not really using it and it is just gathering dust in your garage or parking area, it may be better if you just junk it. Have you ever tried junking a car?

If you haven’t you may be confused about what to do to properly prepare the car. Yes, even if your car is for junking, you still need preparations made for it. You should prepare these things even before the tow truck that brings your vehicle to the junk shop arrives. Such preparations will include the following:

Keep Your Personal Belongings

Even if we only use the car to get from one place to another, there can still be a lot of personal belongings in them. There could actually be a lot that has been accumulating for years. It is your responsibility to remove your personal belongings because if you don’t you’d be having problems.

You should do that before the tow truck arrives to take your vehicle.

Here are some places to check for your personal items:

  • Glove compartment
  • Door pocket
  • Under the seats
  • Under the floor mat
  • The trunk
  • Dashboard
  • Center console
  • Sun visor
  • Seat console

Prepare The Paperwork

If you want to turn your junk car into cash, it is important to get the documents ready. You need to prove that the car is yours by having the car title. However, you could still sell the car without a title but it would be more difficult.

Sell Valuable Components

You can make more money out of your junk car by selling some of the valuable components instead of simply scrapping the whole thing. Here are a few car parts that you should think of selling:

  • Stereo systems
  • Battery
  • Alloy wheels
  • Catalytic converter
  • Tires

Be Realistic When It Comes To The Car Price

We all want to make a fortune out of junking our cars but that isn’t always possible. You have to understand that the value of the junked cars is mostly based on the amount of metal it has.

The metal components of the vehicle make up for its value. Those metals are the ones that are recycled.

The price of the metals will also affect the price of your junked car. There are a few metals like steel, iron, aluminum, copper, platinum, and palladium that have a good scrap value. Usually, larger vehicles like trucks have more value because they contain more metals than smaller ones.

Know Your Car

The metals that your car has could also depend on the make and model of your vehicle. Aside from that, there are also some cars that are currently in demand for spare parts. Knowing relevant information about your vehicle will help you easily identify if you can make more money from it.

Sometimes junk cars don’t end up getting scrapped. If they are still well enough to be driven, some can sel them as used vehicles. That’s why it is also great to note whether the car still runs or not. You also need to figure out how much mileage it has.

Cancel The Car Insurance

For cars that are to be junked, there is no need for car insurance. You should cancel the insurance if you have already decided that you will be junking your car. You can call up the insurance company and tell them you like to stop the insurance because you are already selling the vehicle.

It would be best to set the date the day when your car is hauled away. That way, the car is still covered until it reaches the junk shop.

Remove The License Plate

One thing that you shouldn’t forget is to remove the license plate of your vehicle. Be sure to do this beforehand. Each state has its own rules when it comes to what you should do with the license plate of the cars that you sell. Most states will require you to return it to the Department of Motor Vehicles. Doing so may also be required before you can cancel the registration.

In some cases, you cannot cancel the insurance policy if you haven’t canceled the registration and returned the plates. Make sure you know the process followed in your state and follow them.

Aside from what the state requires, you shouldn’t leave your plates on your old junked car because it can be stolen and used in another car that could be used for a crime. You don’t want to have the hassle of dealing with the police just because you left your license plates on your junked vehicle.
